If you’d rather not spend the money on a product specifically made for the aerobic digestion of kitchen and pet waste, you can always make your own. Not only will you save some money but you’ll get that DIY feeling of satisfaction as well. All you need are a few tools and a garbage can.
The tutorial lists the following as items necessary to complete the project:
- Bin with a tight-fitting lid
- Electric drill
- Holesaw kit
- Felt-tip marker
The bin, or garbage can, with the tight fitting lid is obviously the key. I would recommend a black or dark coloured bin to absorb as much heat from the sun as possible.
The holesaw kit is not really necessary. A large drill bit should suffice if you want to go that route; you’ll just need to drill more holes. However, all you need to do is cut out the entire bottom of the bin.
The instructions never state what the felt-tip marker is for; perhaps you can draw pretty pictures on the side of the bin.
A piece of required equipment that isn’t mentioned is a shovel.
